Sheppard Mullin Healthcare team leader Eric Klein was selected as a 2024 “Health Care MVP” by Law360. This is Klein’s second consecutive year as a Law360 Health Care MVP and his fourth MVP recognition overall.

Chosen from a wide range of practice areas, this year’s MVPs “have distinguished themselves from their peers by securing hard-earned successes in high-stakes litigation, complex global matters and record-breaking deals,” according to Law360.

In one of the two largest healthcare services transactions in 2024, Klein led private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice through its multibillion-dollar strategic partnership with Elevance Health, Inc. (NYSE: ELV). In August the partnership launched Mosaic Health, a state-of-the-art physician initiative expected to generate $4 billion in annual revenue by streamlining the patient experience, improving health outcomes and lowering healthcare costs, particularly for the senior population facing an increased burden of illness.

"It was incredibly innovative and challenging," Klein said to Law360, "to put together three separate companies coming from various perspectives on primary care and knitting them together in the face of very rapidly changing regulatory rules — not only antitrust rules, but also the state merger rules and the state cost-impact rules, as well."

Klein is also recognized for working on the largest independent physician association transaction of 2023, representing Seoul Medical Group and its affiliated management services organization, Advanced Medical Management, Inc., in a strategic transaction with Ascend Capital Partners. This is one of multiple significant physician organization transactions that Sheppard Mullin has recently completed focusing on the consolidation of ethnically/culturally aligned patient care organizations in the Medicare Advantage and/or managed Medicaid lines of business, as well as partnering models with FQHC and PACE programs to improve care and access in underserved communities.

Over the course of two years, Klein led a team that helped Duke University and Duke University Health System transform its 1,600+ physician for-profit private diagnostic clinic to an integrated practice model, named Duke Health Integrated Practice. Duke is now operating an aligned clinical enterprise that: enables coordinated patient care, offers greater value-based care opportunities, streamlines administrative services, and supports clinical and research initiatives.

Klein leads the fastest growing multi-sector healthcare law practice in the U.S. Since 2008, Sheppard Mullin’s Healthcare team has grown from two to more than 230 attorneys.
