Sheppard Mullin Represented San José State University in Landmark Bay Area Undergraduate Housing Project
A Sheppard Mullin Real Estate team advised San José State University (“SJSU” or "University") in its partnership with Throckmorton Partners to undertake the Bay Area’s largest post-pandemic conversion of a downtown commercial property to student residential housing, significantly expanding the University’s undergraduate housing inventory.
The project, temporarily referred to as “Spartan Village on the Paseo,” will transform the underutilized south tower of the Signia by Hilton hotel complex into a thriving student housing community in the heart of downtown San Jose. Renovation of the hotel is scheduled to begin immediately to deliver more than 700 new beds for undergraduate students, including 124 affordable beds for students in need, by August 2024. The project is part of the University’s ongoing efforts to allow more students to live within a short walking distance to campus and underscores SJSU’s continued investment in downtown San Jose’s economic vitality and success.
The Sheppard Mullin team that represented SJSU was led by partner Aaron Sobaski with assistance from partners Domenic Drago, Bill Wyatt and Erinn Contreras and attorney Matthew Holbrook.
