Special Counsel Matt Fong to Receive Presidential Nomination
Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP Special Counsel Matt Fong will be nominated by President George W. Bush to serve as Under Secretary of the Army, the White House announced late Friday. The President announced his intention to nominate Fong in a statement released by the Office of Press Secretary Ari Fleischer.

The President announced his intention to nominate Fong in a statement released by the Office of Press Secretary Ari Fleischer.Fong, 47, began his legal career at Sheppard Mullin in 1985 and worked as an associate until 1990. After serving as Vice Chair of California’s State Board of Equalization, he was elected California’s State Treasurer, serving as California’s Chief Financial Officer from 1995-1999. In 1998, he was the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate and, following that campaign, rejoined Sheppard Mullin in 1999 as Special Counsel. Fong served as co-chair of the California "Bush for President" campaign and also served on the National Executive Board of the Bush "Victory 2000" Finance Committee. Following President Bush’s election in November 2000, Fong served on the Presidential Transition team, providing advice and drafting issue papers on the international policy goals for the incoming Secretary of the Treasury.
Fong is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and earned his M.B.A. from Pepperdine University. He received his J.D. from Southwestern University. Fong is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves and has served in the Reserves since 1980. As a Reserve officer, he has been the Chief for Budget and Congressional Analysis for the Pentagon since last year. Fong serves on the Board of Regents for both Pepperdine University and for Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Boy Scouts, ESS Technology, and Trust Company of the West (Galileo Fund), among others. In addition, Fong is Chair of the Leadership America Foundation. Fong’s mother, March Fong Eu, served as California Secretary of State from 1975-1994.
