Sheppard Mullin Serves as U.S. Counsel to Aviation Industry Corporation of China in Negotiation of $1.3bn Joint Venture with GE

01.21.2011

Sheppard Mullin partners Beni Surpin and Curt Dombek, supported by partner Todd Bissett and associates Ping Chu and Xudong Ni, have represented the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), China's largest aerospace manufacturer, in structuring and negotiating the definitive joint venture, intellectual property and export compliance agreements for AVIC's recently signed $1.3 billion joint venture with General Electric. The transaction was a focal point in the talks between President Hu Jintao and President Obama in Washington this week and has received extensive media coverage. Under the deal, the JV will supply an integrated modular avionics system (a core computer system controlling all aircraft functions like that previously developed by GE for the Boeing 787) for China's new C919 civil aircraft. The C919, which was unveiled in November at the Zhuhai air show, will be a single aisle, narrow body commercial aircraft comparable to the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320.
