Seasoned Intellectual Property Partner Dave Randall Joins Sheppard Mullin Los Angeles
David A. Randall has joined the Los Angeles office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP as a partner in the firm's Intellectual Property practice group, joining from Dickstein Shapiro.
Randall has 20 years of experience representing clients in a wide variety of intellectual property matters. He has successfully represented clients in patent, trademark, and trade secret disputes in courts throughout the United States and has been involved in complex multijurisdictional matters in which aspects of the litigation were pending before tribunals around the world. Randall has handled patent interferences, appeals, and trademark opposition/cancellation proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Recently, he successfully defended Belkin, Best Buy and RadioShack against Aerielle Technologies in a multi-patent case related to FM transmitters.
"Dave’s clients span a broad range of technology sectors, including aerospace, biofuels and biochemical, software, optical communications, network systems, satellite, semiconductor, and video gaming, which dovetails well with existing clients and industry expertise. He brings decades of private practice expertise to Sheppard Mullin," said Guy N. Halgren, chairman of Sheppard Mullin.
"I am impressed with Sheppard Mullin’s significant footprint and reputation throughout California and beyond, and I was particularly attracted by the successful growth of the firm’s IP practice, its strong presence in Asia, and its robust full-service platform. I look forward to working with my new partners, and am especially excited to again be practicing with all of the former Lyon & Lyon attorneys, including IP practice co-chair Steve Korniczky, and Bruce Chapman and Laura Burson in Los Angeles," Randall commented.
"Dave joining us represents another step forward in our strategic plan to continue to expand our patent prosecution and litigation capabilities. He is an accomplished IP attorney who counts recognized industry leaders across the globe as clients, and further strengthens and deepens our bench of patent litigators. Dave is the latest high profile lateral partner to join the group and I look forward to again practicing with him,” said Korniczky.
Randall routinely advises clients in connection with the development and management of worldwide patent and trademark portfolios, as well as product design and the procurement of product configuration trademarks. He has prosecuted hundreds of patents in the United States and throughout Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa and is well-versed in the prosecution of patents to withstand the crucible of litigation. Patents that Randall has prosecuted have been successfully asserted multiple times.
In addition to litigation and prosecution, Randall’s practice includes counseling clients on matters of strategic planning, technology transfer and licensing agreements, litigation avoidance, domain name disputes, and the development, implementation, and maintenance of IP portfolio management programs. He represented GeoSynFuels in connection with the formation of a joint venture with the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center to commercialize the production of low-cost proteins, and more recently worked on the formation of a joint venture in Brazil.
Randall received a J.D., cum laude, from Arizona State University in 1991 and a B.S.in Metallurgical Engineering, with honors, from University of Arizona in 1985.
Earlier this month, IP partner Jim Soong joined Sheppard Mullin in Palo Alto from Greenberg Traurig. Last month, patent litigation partner Laura Burson joined the firm from Kirkland & Ellis. In Oct., IP litigation partners Laura Chapman, Brad Graveline, and Scott Miller joined Sheppard Mullin from Foley & Lardner, Winston & Strawn and Connolly Bove, respectively.
Sheppard Mullin’s Intellectual Property practice group includes 90 attorneys firmwide. The firm has 225 attorneys based in its Los Angeles offices.
