Sheppard Mullin Signs EqualAI Pledge To Help Reduce Bias In Artificial Intelligence

01.05.2021

Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP has committed to the EqualAI® pledge, becoming the first law firm to join a growing number of organizations who are collaborating to help reduce bias in artificial intelligence (AI).  EqualAI, a nonprofit led by former U.S. Associate Deputy Attorney General and Senior Policy Advisor to The White House Miriam Vogel, focuses on illuminating and reducing unconscious bias in the development and use of AI. Together with leaders and experts across law, business, technology, and government, EqualAI is developing standards and tools, as well as identifying regulatory and legislative solutions, to increase awareness of and reduce bias.

“Sheppard Mullin is dedicated to increasing diversity and strengthening inclusion in the legal industry and signing the EqualAI pledge is one more important step,” said Ali Shahidi, Sheppard Mullin’s Chief Innovation & Client Solutions Officer.  “We join industry leaders such as Catalyst, Humana and Postmates in working to eliminate bias in AI.  As law firms continue to incorporate advanced technologies such as Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing into the practice of law, the need for ensuring that AI does not contribute to bias is critically important to us and to our clients. We hope that law firms and corporate legal departments will join us in battling the often unseen effects of bias in AI.”
