Litigator of the Week Runners-Up and Shout Outs
The American Lawyer gave a ‘shout out’ in its “Litigation Daily” section, a roundup of the week’s most noteworthy litigation wins, for the firm’s representation in a recent trademark case. Intellectual Property partner Laura Chapman and associates Irene Choe and Chante Westmoreland won a ruling from the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board on behalf of Texas-based artist N. Johnson, a Black multimedia artist and author and creator of “The Self Publication,” a photographic book and video series.
On October 13, 2023, The TTAB rejected an opposition to Johnson’s proposed trademark brought by Advance Magazine Publishers Inc., the publisher of “SELF Magazine.” The TTAB found the publisher hadn’t proven a likelihood of confusion with its “SELF” mark and failed to show the mark was famous.
