Sheppard Mullin Adds Leading Healthcare Partner Megan Rooney in Chicago
Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP is pleased to announce that Healthcare partner Megan Rooney has joined the firm in Chicago. She was most recently a partner at McDermott Will & Emery LLP.
Rooney’s move to Sheppard Mullin comes on the heels of partner Douglas Swill, who also joined the Healthcare industry team in Chicago earlier this month. Together they bring a wealth of experience advising premier hospitals and health systems in a wide variety of corporate transactions. Their move to the firm further strengthens Sheppard Mullin’s full-service hospital and health service capabilities, which include strategic transactions, antitrust, regulatory, real estate, privacy and cybersecurity, technology and digital health/AI, labor and employment, non-profit governance, tax including tax-exemption, and physician alignment advice and counsel.
In the last 18 months, Sheppard Mullin has been involved in several of the industry’s largest hospital purchase and sale transactions, including UCI Health’s $975 million four hospital acquisition of Tenet Healthcare Corporation’s Pacific Coast Network; UCLA Health’s acquisition of the 260-bed West Hills Hospital and Medical Center and UC San Diego’s purchase of Alvarado Hospital Medical Center.
“Adding Doug and now Megan underscores our strategic focus to continuing to grow our Healthcare team with attorneys who have a deep understanding of the healthcare landscape,” said Luca Salvi, chair of Sheppard Mullin. “Megan’s knowledge and skillset handling hospital and health system strategic transactions, including M&A and joint ventures will be a value-add to our firm and clients and allow us to continue to attract work of this scale.”
Rooney counsels hospitals, health systems and healthcare companies through all aspects of strategic transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, affiliations, joint ventures and system restructurings. A former healthcare professional with first-hand clinical experience, Rooney brings unique insight into the business challenges and opportunities facing her clients. She also has deep experience advising hospital and health system clients on regulatory compliance with respect to licensure, accreditation and other state and federal regulatory matters.
“I am thrilled to join Sheppard Mullin's esteemed Healthcare team,” Rooney said. “I am deeply impressed by the depth and breadth of experience of the healthcare attorneys at Sheppard Mullin and the firm's unwavering commitment to expanding this renowned practice to better serve the needs of its clients. Sheppard Mullin’s clients-first approach to service and its culture of collaboration aligns perfectly with my dedication to creating value for clients by ensuring they stay ahead of the curve to seize opportunities and identify potential challenges.”
“I’ve had the pleasure of knowing and working with Doug Swill for years and am excited to be on the same side of the table as him now,” Rooney added. “Together, we will continue to expand the firm’s capabilities and deliver exceptional results for our clients and Sheppard Mullin.”
Eric Klein, Sheppard Mullin’s Healthcare industry team leader added: “The market is driving hospital affiliations over the next several years to address challenges with scale, capital and the transition to value and risk-based reimbursement, and we are well positioned with the right expertise, experience and bench strength to support our clients effectively. Megan has advised on more than 100 healthcare transactions, so she is a valued addition to our team in Chicago and firmwide.”
“Megan’s impressive track record in advising hospitals, health systems and healthcare companies on an array of acquisitions, joint ventures and other transactions supports our robust and growing M&A practice and our expanding healthcare portfolio. Her expertise in navigating healthcare transactions adds another dimension to our capabilities, further enhancing our ability to serve clients effectively,” remarked Jeralin Cardoso, co-leader of the firm’s Corporate practice.
Rooney served as an adjunct professor of law at Northwestern University School of Law for nearly a decade. She received her BS, summa cum laude, in Nursing from the University of Michigan and her J.D., with a Certification in Health Law, from Northwestern University School of Law.
